马来西亚简称大马，是一个位于东南亚的联邦制、议会民主制、选举君主制和君主立宪制并存的国家。目前全国共十三个州，另有三个联邦直辖区（吉隆坡、布城及纳闽），全国面积共33万平方公里。

1957年8月31日，首席部长东姑阿都拉曼宣布马来亚联合邦独立；1963年，马来亚联合邦联同新加坡、沙巴及砂拉越组成了马来西亚。1965年8月，新加坡退出马来西亚。

马来西亚国境被中国南海分为两部分：位于马来半岛的马来西亚半岛（西马）及位于加里曼丹岛北部的中南半岛（东马）。由于马来西亚的地理位置接近赤道，其气候属于热带型雨林气候。首都位于吉隆坡，是马来西亚人口最密集和最繁荣的地区，联邦政府所在地则位于布城。

马来西亚是一个多民族、多元文化的国家，官方宗教虽然为伊斯兰教，但国民于马来西亚宪法下享有宗教自由的权利。政府系统密切仿照了英国的威斯敏斯特的议会制度。国家对内外的最高代表被称为元首，而政府首脑是首相（总理）。

马来西亚是一个新兴的多元化经济国家。经济在1990年代突飞猛进，为“亚洲四小虎”国家之一，是资本主义国家。马来西亚已成为亚洲地区引人注目的多元化新兴工业国家和世界新兴市场经济体。

马来西亚华人的移民史可追朔至汉代。唐、宋时中国和马来群岛已有频密的商业活动和文化交流，元代时已有中国人在当地定居的明确记载。

到了明代郑和下西洋时曾多次在马六甲(明史称为满剌加）停留，后来将马六甲、巨港（今属印尼）、泗水（今属印尼）等营建成其船队的大本营。至今马六甲仍然留有大量与郑和有关的遗迹。一些华人因为和当地人通婚，开始在马六甲定居，渐渐受马来文化影响，繁衍开来。

此时开始，华人开始在马六甲形成聚落定居，成为组成马六甲重要的一个民族。明朝衰弱后，这些通婚华人的后裔由于交通不便、满清闭关政策等因素，开始与祖国关系疏远。在与本土文化相互交融的情况下，他们逐渐形成一支新的民族——娘惹峇峇。

娘惹峇峇的母语也由方言（主要是福建话）慢慢转变成夹杂方言以及马来语的娘惹峇峇语，但依然保留了各种华人的风俗仪式。

而华人大量移民今马来西亚各地则是从第二次鸦片战争后开始。当时清朝战败，中英签署《北京条约》，清廷容许外国商人招聘汉人出洋工作充当廉价劳工(苦力）。由于当时英国殖民者需要大量的人力资源以开发马来亚半岛，大量的华工（或称为苦力）从中国输入到马来亚半岛成为矿工、种植工人等。

在蒸汽船使用后，华侨南来的数量更是急剧上升。此时到来的华人移民人数已经大幅度超越早期的娘惹峇峇，所以被早期定居的人称为“新客”。

这时期马来半岛的华人人口的男女比例严重失衡，这是因为劳工们的侨乡意识浓厚，多不打算扶老携幼来到马来亚定居，而是希望赚够钱回到老家故乡。大量的华人下南洋，充分地说明了一个道理，人挪活，哪里有生存的机会，就应该去往哪里。

到了1929年，全球开始经济大萧条。此时，华侨妇女开始大量移民马来亚，男女人口比例结构趋向平衡。二战后，由于世界进入冷战时代，英属马来亚正值马共叛乱，移民条例收紧，中国来马的移民潮逐渐减少甚至停止。此后华人参与了马来亚独立运动与马来西亚的建国运动，并在当地繁衍开来。

马来西亚在1967年独立，在独立之前为马来亚。1402年由Parameswara在马来亚半岛所建立的王国，明朝历史当时称马六甲为满剌加国，马六甲王朝全盛时期的国土范围覆盖苏门答腊西南部至泰国南部的北大年。

18世纪末，大量的中国人以及印度人移民到马来亚生活。马来西亚主要有三大民族，既马来土族，华裔，印度裔和少数民族。所以这里的人文与历史都有着丰富的当地以及外国的色彩。熟悉马来西亚的历史背景就会发现，马来西亚是如何走到今天。

马来西亚的官方语言是马来语。

马来语是马来西亚和文莱的官方语言，也是新加坡的官方语言之一。有广义和狭义两种含义。广义上的马来语泛指属于南岛语系印度尼西亚语族的诸语言;狭义上的马来语指一种使用于马六甲海峡附近地区的语言。狭义上的马来语在语言分类上属于南岛语系的印度尼西亚语族。

在1945年以前，苏门达腊岛以外的很多地方也是使用马来语。但是在印度尼西亚于该年从荷兰手中宣布独立以后，印度尼西亚所使用的马来语则被改称为印尼语。

根据马来西亚、印尼和文莱共同达成的默契，马来语是以廖内语(Bahasa Riau)--- 苏门达腊廖内省(Riau)的口音 --- 当作标准语的。这是因为长久以来，现属印尼的廖内省一直被视为是马来语的诞生地。

James周: "When they say they are possibly at the northern corridor,
along central Asia, I thought to myself if they are alive, what kind of
conditions are they being held. And you said you are a father, a husband
yourself. If that was your family, how would you feel right now?"

Hishammuddin Hussein: "This is the most difficult thing for me to
face the emotions of the family as concerned. I really feel for them. I
ran to see them (Chinese families), I brought my children with me. And I
wanted to go to Beijing yesterday. But for reasons very clear today, I
was not able to do that. Now we’ll get to see them soon. I pray I hope
that I would have much more to tell them. I pray for that every day, and
by then, again, I have to be responsible, giving them hope, maybe
something that is credible, and something they can really hold on to.
Because at the end of the day, it’s actually what they are hoping from
us.

With time I think I will prove to them that the intention is sincere.
And that is why I am here doing the interview today, and there will be
more interviews with CCTV. Because then until I am in Beijing, I am not
able to bring this face to face with them, and I can’t reach all of
them. And James, this is why I am here to pass the massage to them from
me. It’s a great opportunity, and I appreciate. But tomorrow, my
responsibility is to get down to work again, and to find where the plane
is.

And we are talking about the northern corridor, the new countries
that are being involved. We have to look at the new possibilities, but
at least with the PM’s indications today. Being very consistence and
very transparent, at least have some directions, we can focus our
efforts on, to find out where the airplane is. Until we find the
airplane, we get the black box, we find out what the states the
passengers are in, how can I say anything more?"

James: "Another question that people are saying is, who and not just
why, who would have that skill to understand how to turn off the
transponder, how to effectively make the aircraft mute to the outside
world, and then be able escape the techniques of different countries and
to not be detectable for radars. Who is this person?"

Hishammuddin Hussein: "I would like to know too. And basically we
won’t know until we get all the facts and be responsible to name any
names. But there are a lot of speculation out there. And I think it is
unfair to doubt the investigation, anything reviewed now will affect the
investigation. And it is unfair to the families. But they don’t want to
know the facts that may later on be found out to be untrue."

James: "You are going right back to the passenger manifest. Let’s
talk about the crew manifest, because if it would require such exclusive
knowledge of aviations and also the skill to pilot a plane. Of course
it’s no surprise that the two most obvious candidates are your captain,
and the first officer?"

Hishammuddin Hussein: "But it doesn’t mean that anybody else could
not be the candidates too. And like I said from the beginning the all
manifest, all passengers on that list are from day 1. But the Prime
Minister indicated that because of circumstances and cooperated facts,
and we are now intensifying our investigation on the personnels on
board. And that is especially indicated to our police. And I think we
should allow some space from them to the necessary facts finding."
